Project Description

Emily Smith B. Soc. Wk. | Grad. Dip. (Family Therapy) | MAASW

Accredited Mental Health Social Worker
Orange, New South Wales, Australia.

Since completing a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of NSW in 2004 Emily’s working life has spanned a number of positions, all of which have contributed to a strong passion for working with children, young people, families and communities to overcome adversity and enhance mental health and well-being.  Emily’s role as Paediatric Social Worker with the Centre for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick incorporated intensive, long term practical support and therapeutic services to children and adolescents diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Having grown up herself in the country, Emily’s role as Team Leader for Mental Health Services for Centacare Wilcannia-Forbes took her back to her hometown to support a team to deliver individual, group and community programs for families experiencing mental health issues across rural and remote NSW including the communities of Forbes, Parkes, Cowra, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Murrin Bridge, Bourke, Brewarrina, Broken Hill and Wilcannia. During this period Emily undertook further study in the Strengths Based Approach, Solution Focussed Therapy and Narrative Therapy and had the privilege of supporting families affected by drought and isolation in rural and remote communities as well as working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community workers to provide culturally sensitive programs to Aboriginal children, young people and families many of whom had experienced intergenerational trauma.

Emily’s growing interest in mental health led her to take on a role as Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinician and later Clinical Leader for Infant, Child, Youth and Family Mental Health for the Western NSW LHD. These roles incorporated assessment and treatment for children and adolescents experiencing moderate to severe Depression and Anxiety Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Non-Suicidal Self Injury, Eating Disorders, Early Psychosis, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Complex Developmental Trauma.

Working within this role had Emily refining skills in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to provide evidence based individual and group therapy programs that match the presenting needs of the children and young people presenting with difficulties as well as providing clinical supervision and strategic support for clinicians working at the front line of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Emily continues to have a strong commitment to supporting young people with mental illness and embarked on a new role as part time Clinical Lead at headspace Orange in 2018.

With a growing awareness of the connection between mental health and family environment and attachment relationships, Emily undertook further study and completed a Graduate Diploma of Family Therapy through the NSW Institute of Psychiatry in 2015 and trained in the Tuning into Kids and Tuning into Teens Emotionally Intelligent Parenting Program in 2016, strengthening her capacity to join with children, young people, families and carers coping with mental health issues and complex trauma to work collaboratively with them to develop new understanding, change patterns of interaction and strengthen relationships.
